Four Downs: L.T. finally ready for takeoff?

The folks in England got to see a great game Sunday at Wembley Stadium with New Orleans and San Diego putting on an offensive show. Both teams combined for 860 yards with the Saints winning 37-32.

England got to see real American football this time, not the rubbish from last year's game between the Giants and Dolphins. The English fans also got to see the real LaDainian Tomlinson.

Tomlinson had his best game of the season with 19 carries for 105 yards and five catches for 65 yards and a touchdown. He had a 26-yard run on his first carry and a 40-yard jaunt also, showing his burst is still there. He also showed his receiving skills by finishing second in catches and yards for the Chargers. After this game, the toe injury might not be a concern anymore, which is a good thing.

Going overseas might have been the best thing for Tomlinson. Maybe he should stay there and take up soccer. Does the English Premier League need another striker?

Scratch that, we need Tomlinson here, especially since he's back.

Now, will Tomlinson be as good as the past few years? Probably not. He's 29 and showing the wear and tear most running backs go through. He also misses his former fullback in Lorenzo Neal, who is now in Baltimore.

But Tomlinson is about to return as an elite running back, and you're never going to bench him again as long as he's healthy. When the Chargers return from their bye in Week 9, Tomlinson is going to take off.

Here's his remaining schedule: Kansas City, at Pittsburgh, Indianapolis, Atlanta, Oakland, at Kansas City, at Tampa Bay and Denver. Aside from the Steelers and Bucs, those are five of the worst run defenses in the NFL. And he will always have the chance to score and do well in the passing game against Pittsburgh and Tampa Bay.

Tomlinson is ready to go, and he's going to lead your Fantasy team as expected when you drafted him No. 1 overall. He should get back to 100 percent with the toe injury during the bye week, so expect a fresh Tomlinson at the Chiefs in Week 10.

Drew Brees was the star in England with 339 passing yards and three touchdowns, and Philip Rivers was dominant also with 341 passing yards, three touchdowns and an interception. But Fantasy owners should have been watching Tomlinson.

He finally looked like the running back we remember and gave us an indication of things to come.

First down

The Cowboys won 13-9 Sunday against Tampa Bay, but their offensive woes remain. Only Marion Barber played well with 100 total yards (71 rushing and 29 receiving), but Jason Witten left the game with bruised ribs, so he could miss some time.

Brad Johnson was inept with 122 passing yards and a touchdown. Roy Williams scored in his first game in Dallas, but he only had two catches for 10 yards. Terrell Owens also struggled with five catches for 33 yards and has now gone three games without a touchdown.

The question remains for Fantasy owners: How 'bout them Cowboys? But it's not being asked in a good way.

Let's look at it from an optimistic point of view. Tony Romo (broken finger) is expected to return following the bye in Week 10, so these struggles could only last one more week at the Giants in Week 9. And if Witten is out, it shouldn't be long with the rib injury based on his post-game comments.

Barber is still posting solid stats, and you have to figure Williams is coming around as he learns the playbook. As for Owens, this is nothing new.

In 2006, Owens only had five touchdowns through seven games and finished with 13. Last year, he also had five touchdowns through five games but finished with 15.

This year, Owens again has five touchdowns through eight games. Is he ready to take off? His track record says yes.

You have to start Owens every week, along with Witten if he's healthy and even Williams as a No. 3 Fantasy wide receiver. The Cowboys might struggle against the Giants, but you never know when the offense could get going.

Hopefully after the bye week, all will be right in Dallas. But right now it's been tough to watch for Fantasy owners.

Second down

Ted Ginn, Jr. was started in 3 percent of leagues on CBSSports.com and owned in 17 percent of leagues. Yet there he was leading the NFL in receiving yards with 175 on seven catches against Buffalo.

Ginn was the surprise player of the week, and he's worth keeping an eye on. But don't go spending all your bid points on him just yet. Prior to this game, Ginn had 20 catches for 177 yards for the season.

While Chad Pennington has played great this year and has 893 passing yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions in his past three games against Houston, Baltimore and Buffalo, the Dolphins remain a running team. Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams are the first two options on offense, and Greg Camarillo has been the best receiver prior to this week.

Ginn could be in line for a breakout and showed signs of playing well toward the end of last year. If you have a roster spot to fill, add Ginn. But don't start dropping good players just to pick him up because this performance might just be a one-week wonder.

A better player to add would be Donnie Avery, who was started in 26 percent of leagues Sunday and owned in 50 percent. Avery also had a great day with six catches for 163 yards and a touchdown at New England.

Avery now has 14 catches for 291 yards and two touchdowns in his past three games against Washington, Dallas and the Patriots. He has shown he can be a quality Fantasy wide receiver and should be added ahead of Ginn if both are on your waiver wire.

Third down

It's time to consider benching Brett Favre. Even when the matchup is favorable, he tends to struggle.

Favre had 290 passing yards, which was his season high, with two touchdowns, but he also had three interceptions against Kansas City. He now has seven interceptions in his past three games against Cincinnati, Oakland and the Chiefs.

Since quarterback play has been horrible this year, it's hard to bench Favre. But if you have a better option -- say Matt Schaub, Kyle Orton or even Chad Pennington right now -- it might be worth sitting Favre no matter the opponent.

Sure, he'll have big games like in Week 4 against Arizona when he threw six touchdown passes. But the interceptions are starting to negate the positive results, and he's hurting Fantasy owners more often than not right now.

Fourth down

To illustrate how bad quarterback play is this year, among the passing leaders Sunday was Tyler Thigpen. Yes, the quarterback for the Chiefs. He passed for 280 yards and two touchdowns against the Jets.

While it was a good outing, consider the Jets passing defense is terrible. But it shows Fantasy owners should be thrilled if they drafted and still have a good quarterback right now.

Ben Roethlisberger struggled with four interceptions against the Giants, and J.T. O'Sullivan was benched against Seattle. Even Seneca Wallace threw two touchdowns.

If Pennington is available, add him now. And if you still have the chance to get Schaub, Orton or even Jason Campbell, who played well against the Lions with 328 yards and a touchdown, consider yourself lucky.

Some other observations: Anquan Boldin didn't show any rust in his return from a head injury with nine catches for 63 yards and two touchdowns at Carolina. It's safe to start him in all leagues again. ... The same goes for Brian Westbrook, who wasn't bothered with his rib injury while gaining 209 total yards and two touchdowns against Atlanta. Have no fear in starting him every week. ... If Matt Jones and Deuce McAllister are going to be suspended, they went out with good games. Jones had eight catches for 117 yards and a touchdown against Cleveland, and McAllister had 85 total yards and a touchdown against San Diego. Keep an eye on what happens with them because it could have an impact in plenty of Fantasy leagues. ... Clinton Portis is the MVP right now. He ran for 126 yards at Detroit and now joins O.J. Simpson as the only players in NFL history with 120 yards rushing in five straight games. Portis also has seven rushing touchdowns and is thriving in Jim Zorn's offense.
